What happens at your first session?

It’s normal to be nervous for your first therapy session…

You can think of the first visit as a detailed information gathering session. We generally begin by checking in with why you chose to start therapy and what goals you have as an individual or as a couple. I’ll go over confidentiality and answer any questions you might have about the therapeutic process.

A big part of session one is sharing with me your background, general lifestyle, family history, medical history, and mental health history to the degree you are comfortable. By charting this general map of your life I am better able to connect patterns to your treatment goal and plan.

For couples each partner has a chance to share their own thoughts, feelings, ideas, and goals behind what they are wanting and needing from therapy. Each partner also shares their own background information as well. This gives partners a chance to not only let me learn more about your relationship together but also lets partners possibly learn more about each other.
